What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a modern highlighting technique that produces gorgeous, low-maintenance results. It involves hand-painting soft highlights throughout your hair, a technique that allows us to place the colour exactly where they will look best.
The aim is to produce a beautiful natural looking result, as though you have been out in the sun all day. As the colour is painted free-hand, there are no hard lines produced, meaning that the effect is subtler than that achieved with conventional foil highlights.
You don't need to have balayage throughout your hair - many of our clients opt for fashionable face-framing balayage where highlights are added around the face only, to enhance your facial features. Using balayage we can create a bespoke individual look, which can be adapted to your individual personality and style.
What’s The Difference Between Balayage & Ombré?
Ombré produces a distinct contrast and two-toned effect from root to tip. Balayage, by contrast, is a subtler technique, in which the colour is more blended and only a few sections of highlights will be added to your roots. Ombré is a look that is dark at the roots and gradually becomes lighter towards the tips in a defined way, whereas balayage is more multi-dimensional and the colour is strongest at the tips of your hair.
There are many other hair colouring techniques and variations on balayage, including babylights, baby balayage, root melt, root stretch, colour melt or free-hand highlights. If you’ve seen a hair look you love, bring us in an image and we’ll create it for you.
Is Balayage Suitable For All Hair Colours?
Yes, balayage can look beautiful on all shades of blonde, brown, red, auburn or even grey hair. Blonde balayage and warm caramel tones are amongst the most popular shades at our Bathgate salon, but you could also use balayage to try out fashion colours such as pastels or bolds.
How Do I Maintain My Balayage Hair Colour?
At your appointment we will advise you on how to keep your balayage looking fresh for longer. One of the reasons balayage is so popular is that it's a relatively low maintenance hair colour. Your root regrowth will be less obvious than with conventional foil highlights because there are no harsh lines in your colour.
To keep your balayage at it’s best we recommend visiting your Jordan Alexander colourist every 8 weeks or so. A colour glossing touch-up session every 6 weeks would also help to keep your hair looking really fresh between appointments.
At Jordan Alexander Hair Salon, we recommend using the Aveda range of professional quality colour care shampoo and conditioner, available from our Bathgate salon.
